For example: He promised that he would pay me the money the next day.
There are four types of sentences which can be changed from direct to indirect speech –
1. Simple (Assertive)
2. Interrogative (Questions)
3. Imperative (Order, request, advise, suggestion, etc.)
4. Exclamatory (Surprise or sudden feelings)
Read these sentences.
1. The teacher said, “Priya is a good girl.” Simple (Assertive)
The teacher said that Priya was a good girl.
2. She asked, ‘‘What is this? Interrogative (Questions)
She asked what that is.
3. She said to me, ‘‘listen carefully’’. Imperative (Order, request, advise, etc.)
She told me to listen carefully.
4. Shweta said, ‘‘How beautiful the painting is!’’ Exclamatory (Surprise or sudden feelings)
Shweta exclaimed that the painting was very beautiful.
A. Change the following sentences from direct speech to indirect speech.
1. Rajeev said to Madan, “There is an excellent band playing later on.”
