III. Unfulfilled Condition

In this type of sentence, we talk about something that cannot be fulfilled as the action has
                already taken place.
                Example:

                • If you had listened to me, things would have turned much better.
In this type of sentence, we use the past perfect tense in the ‘if’ clause and would have + past
participle in the main clause. In formal or literary English, however, we leave out ‘if’ and put
                ‘had’ first.

                Example:
                • Had I known of his wicked plan, I wouldn’t have given my consent.

Complete these sentences by using appropriate clause which complements the condition.

                1. ____________________________, he would have survived.

                2. If you had contested the election, ____________________________.

                3. ____________________________, she would have been Miss India.
                4. If Ganguly had been the Indian captain, the team ____________________________.

                5. ____________________________, the film would have become a super hit.
                6. If they had worked hard, ____________________________.

Read up on the Internet and analyse whatever you have read in the poem. Also, present
your thoughts before the class on whether the India we live in today is the same India
                that the poet has envisioned.
