III.  Metaphor

                                 The hills untied their bonnets.

                    This sentence is an example of metaphor where the hills becoming visible in the light of the
                    morning sun are compared to a face that becomes visible when the bonnet is untied.
                    In a metaphor, the comparison is not stated; it is implied. It does not use the words ‘as’ or ‘like’.


                    Read the sentences given below. Each of them has a metaphor. Underline the metaphor in
                    each sentence. One has been done for you.

                    1.   Ribbons of sunlight streaked through the sky.

                    2.   The narrow street snaked its way through the housing colony.

                    3.  My fingers were icicles, by the time I got home.

                    4.   The land lay still and calm under a blanket of snow.
                    5.  Amita has a heart of gold.
