Using the word ‘such’
The word ‘such’ is determiner and a pronoun, which can be used in a number of different ways.
Here are the ways it can be used in a sentence.
• Such as...can be used to give examples or in a comparison.
Example: Harsh liked to play games such as tennis, cricket, and football.
• Such as...need not always be used one after the other in a sentence.
Example: On such a day as this, when it is raining so hard, it is not safe to drive.
• Such as...combined with an adjective or a noun displays extremes, and can be used to form
an exclamation. It can also be combined with a noun that passes judgement. Again, this
would work as an exclamation.
Example: Albert Einstein was such a genius!
• One can use the word ‘such’ to display extremes or for exclamatory remarks, without
accompanying the article, a.
Example: Ananya has such pretty eyes!
• As such...is used to identify exact sense of the word or object.
Example: How can we tell this is M.G. Road if it is not marked as such?

I. Definite and Indefinite Articles
• ‘A’ and ‘An’ are called indefinite articles. ‘A’ is used before the words beginning with a
consonant sound in the singular number. For example:
There was a book on the table. They have built a house.
• ‘An’ is used before the words that begin with vowel sound in singular number. For example:
An octopus is hiding under water. This is an expensive hotel.
