Rulers
The Word window has two rulers – horizontal and vertical. The horizontal ruler, located
at the top of Work Area, is used to set tabs, left and right margins, and the width of
table columns. The vertical ruler, located at the left of Work Area, is used to set top and
bottom margins, and height of table rows.
Scroll Bar
The Word window has two scroll bars – Vertical
and Horizontal. The Vertical scroll bar, present
at the right edge of the document window, is
used to move up and down in a document. The
Horizontal scroll bar, present at the bottom of
the document window, is used to move left and
right in a document.
Status Bar
The Status bar, present at the bottom of the Word window, displays information related
to the current document, such as number of pages, lines, and words. It also contains
the View buttons and the Zoom bar on the right side.

CREATING A NEW DOCUMENT
A new document in Word 2016 can be created directly from the Start screen or from the
main window. The Document gallery in the Start screen displays a list of predesigned
documents called Templates, which can be used to create a new document.
To create a new document from the Word main window:
1. Click the File tab.
The Backstage view opens.
2. Click New.
A list of templates appears. 2
3. Click on Blank document.
A new blank document opens in Word.
