Let’s Learn Grammar
Finite and Non-finite Verbs
Read these sentences.
1. The villagers ran towards the mountain to save themselves.
2. The sea water rose during the tsunami.
In the first sentence, the verb ‘ran’ agrees with its subject, ʽthe villagersʼ.
And, in the second sentence, ‘rose’ agrees with the subject ʽthe sea waterʼ.
So ‘ran’ and ‘rose’ are finite verbs. Words like drink, run, play, break, sing are finite verbs because
they change according to number, person or tense.
For example, ‘rose’ is the past tense of ‘rise’ but in the present tense, it would be ‘rise’.
Note : An infinitive verb is generally to + verb;
For example – I love to play video games.
Non-finite verbs are those verbs that do not change their forms based on the number and person of
the subject. Non-finite verbs are of three types: gerunds, participles and infinitives.
Read the following sentences.
1. Walking is good for health.
2. I met a girl carrying a bouquet of flowers.
3. I go to office to work.
In the above sentences, ‘walking’, ‘carrying’ and ‘to work’ are non-finite verbs.
