Relative Pronouns
Read the following sentences carefully.
I knew Kalpana Chawla who went on a space mission.
Columbia was the space shuttle which carried Kalpana into space.
In the above sentences ‘who’ and ‘which’ do the following things.
They are used in place of nouns (‘who’ for Kalpana and ‘which’ for the space shuttle),
so they are pronouns.
They connect two sentences.
(a) I knew Kalpana Chawla. Kalpana Chawla went on a space mission.
(b) Columbia was a space shuttle. Columbia carried Kalpana into space.
They are related to the nouns used before them, so these words are called relative
pronouns. Who, whose, whom, which, what, that are relative pronouns.
Use of Relative Pronouns
‘Who’ is used for singular and plural nouns (persons only).
Examples : I met Mohan who returned my book.
My father met the players who were in the park.
‘ Whose’ is used for persons and sometimes things.
Examples : This is the boy whose book is with me.
Open the book whose cover is green.
‘ Whom’ is used for persons.
Example : Ravi is the boy whom all praise.
