                Relative Pronouns

                Read the following sentences carefully.

                I knew Kalpana Chawla who went on a space mission.
                Columbia was the space shuttle which carried Kalpana into space.

                In  the above sentences ‘who’ and ‘which’ do the following things.

                  They are used in place of nouns (‘who’ for Kalpana and ‘which’ for the space shuttle),
                      so they are pronouns.

                  They connect two sentences.
                      (a) I knew Kalpana Chawla. Kalpana Chawla went on a space mission.

                      (b) Columbia was a space shuttle. Columbia carried Kalpana into space.
                  They are related to the nouns used before them, so these words are called relative
                      pronouns. Who, whose, whom, which, what, that are relative pronouns.

                Use of Relative Pronouns

                  ‘Who’ is used for singular and plural nouns (persons only).

                      Examples       :  I met Mohan who returned my book.

                                       My father met the players who were in the park.

                     ‘  Whose’ is used for persons and sometimes things.

                      Examples       :  This is the boy whose book is with me.
                                       Open the book whose cover is green.


                     ‘  Whom’ is used for persons.
                       Example       :  Ravi is the boy whom all praise.
