Foreword

Zest is a series of comprehensive English coursebooks that has been designed for
classes 1 to 8. The series is based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and

follows the guidelines of the National Curriculum Framework for Foundation Stage
(NCF-FS) 2022.
The series attempts to provide competency-based content in a simple, interesting,

and engaging manner. Each chapter covers reading comprehension, listening,
speaking, writing, vocabulary, grammar, activity, and enhance your skills.

Salient features of the series:
• Variety of chapters with different themes: A rich selection of both Indian and
international literary works(prose, poetry, play)has been used to spark the

interest of the learners in understanding and enjoying the English literature.
• Warm-Up introduces the learners to the chapter.

• Word Meanings include the meanings of new and unfamiliar words.
• Comprehension covers Multiple Choice Questions, Fill in the blanks, True or
False, Answer the following questions, and Reference to Context (for classes 5

to 8). It covers objective, factual, inferential, and analytical questions.
• Let’s Listen covers listening tasks to improve the listening skills of the students

through a variety of exercises, and to recognise the sounds of words and their
pronunciation.
• Let’s Speak includes speaking tasks to help the learners to build English speaking

proficiency in practical situations.
• Let’s Write provides various forms of exercises to improve creative and written
expression.

• Vocabulary promotes enrichment of word collection.
• Let’s Learn Grammar focuses on grammar concepts with appropriate examples.

• Activity and Enhance Your Skills cover art integration, cross-curricular linkages,
21st-century skills, and life experiences.

• Test Papers 1 and 2 have been included for self-assessment covering the
syllabus.
