Substance abuse is the most dangerous experiment. It can impact the brain’s ability to
function in the short term as well as prevent proper growth and development later in life.

Studies show that the adolescent brain reacts differently to alcohol consumption than an
adult brain. Individuals who start consuming alcohol in teenage years, especially those who
drink a lot, are more likely to become alcoholics later in life than those who stay away from

alcohol during adolescence.

Story Corner

Anita was studying in class 8. She was one of the best students of her
class. She had very few friends because she did not open up easily

to people. There was a girl, Devisha, in Anita’s class.
Devisha was a ‘cool’ kid, who had many

friends and was very popular. One day,
Devisha invited Anita to her birthday

party. Devisha’s parents were out of
town, so she had arranged for alcohol
at her party so as to impress the kids

in her class with how grown–up she
was. She encouraged all the party

guests to try alcohol, and to seem
cool, they agreed to do it. Gradually,

Anita noticed that at the party,
almost all the girls and boys were

trying alcohol and there was one
group of boys who had brought in
cigarettes which they were smoking

in a corner and laughing.
